Chula
About
The interiors of Chula, a 408 m² (4,392 sq ft) weekend house in Costa Esmeralda, are built from four materials and almost nothing else. Two hundred metres from the sea, every surface has to survive salt, and the palette was chosen for that before it was chosen for anything else.
MORE
Floors read as cement throughout. Ceilings are the exposed concrete of the structure. Joinery, cladding and furniture are incienso and petiribí, and the window frames are wood-look PVC, which holds up to salt where timber and steel do not. Textiles are bone. Nothing here needs to be sealed every summer.

The stone of the exterior comes indoors twice, and only twice: at the fireplace in the living room and at the grill in the gallery. Córdoba cascarón stone also lines the three patios of the lower suites, so from inside each bedroom the same wall continues past the glass.
The courtyard that cuts the plan in two does the work of a west facade. Afternoon sun reaches the living room through it rather than through the front, filtered, and the planting sits inside the house rather than around it.
Upstairs the main suite is lined in timber to the ceiling. A freestanding Corian tub stands against the glass facing the sea, the vanity is a timber table with stone basins, and a rattan chair hangs on the balcony outside the bathroom. From the suite a walkway crosses above the courtyard to a roof terrace over the living room: the most private place in the house, and the one with the longest view.
